Seizure Support Foundation

Inspiring Strength

Seizure Support Foundation is a health – and education – based non – governmental organization in Nigeria. We are committed to providing support, education and advocacy for children and families affected by neurological impairments like Autism Spectrum Disorders, Seizure Disorders, Cerebral Palsy and Down’s Syndrome.

Seizure Support Foundation’s primary goals include providing educational and health-based support and resources to children and families affected by neurological impairments, increasing awareness and understanding of neurological impairments and learning disabilities.

Through our programs and activities, we empower children and families battling with neurological impairments, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds.

The organization is governed by a board of directors and staffed by a team of dedicated professionals and volunteers who share a common vision of seeing a more inclusive society where individuals with neurological impairments can live independent and productive lives.

Seizure Support Foundation (SSF) was established to address the needs of children and families affected by neurological disorders, particularly in Nigeria.

Seizure Support Foundation is inspired by the healing of the epileptic in Mark 9:24-27, where Jesus stretched out His hand to lift the child up. Our logo reflects this mission, depicting a stronger personality lifting up a weaker one on a global scale.

At SSF, we are committed to giving our time, resources, and expertise to uplift these children and their families, with a vision that extends beyond Africa to impact lives around the world.

Vision

Seizure Support Foundation envisions a society where independent and productive living is possible for individuals challenged by neurological impairments.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

  1. Educational Exclusion of children with neurological impairments. In Nigeria, children with neurological impairments regularly face significant educational exclusion and limited access to quality education. This gap is even wider with children from under deserved backgrounds. Several factors contribute to this issue including general lack of awareness and understanding of neurological impairments; lack of adequate educational infrastructure and resources especially in the rural areas; shortage of trained special education teachers and other support professionals and lack of adequate and reliable data on children with neurological impairments in Nigeria.
  2. Social exclusion of children with neurological impairments. This can be attributed to several factors including lack of awareness and understanding about neurological impairments which has led to misconceptions, stigma, stereotypes, social discrimination, isolation and marginalization of children with neurological impairments. Cultural beliefs and superstition further exacerbates this problem. Children from low – income households may face additional barriers to social inclusion due to limited financial resources, poverty and limited social networks.
  3. Healthcare and treatment gaps. Nigeria faces significant challenges in terms of healthcare infrastructures and quality healthcare delivery. This is due to shortage of healthcare facilities, specialized clinics and trained healthcare professionals; inadequate diagnostic and screening facilities; limited availability of specialized and supportive care, poverty and financial constraints coupled with very high cost of healthcare. Inadequate and inequitable distribution of healthcare resources including medications, medical equipment and therapeutic interventions are also implicated.
  4. The lack of adequate and reliable data on children with neurological impairments in Nigeria is a significant challenge. This is because it poses various obstacles to understanding the scope of the problem, developing targeted interventions and monitoring progress in addressing the unique educational needs of these children. There is a dearth of accurate national and subnational prevalence data and medical records of children with neurological impairments such as autism, cerebral palsy, seizure disorders and down’s syndrome. This hampers efforts to allocate resources, design appropriate policies and provide targeted support.
